While research tells us that  sexual minorities, including gay men, may be more likely to use drugs, and at higher risk for substance use problems and  addictions, the truth is that many gay men do not use drugs. For example, statistics showing that a third of gay men use drugs also indicate that twice as many do not. Most of the focus of research into substance use in sexual minorities has been with gay men, largely because of concerns about HIV in the gay community. Research has shown that some gay men engage in the dangerous  party and play  activities, during which substance use, and particularly the use of crystal  meth, has been combined with unsafe sex, including sex with multiple partners. Yet research has also shown that one of many  myths about gay meth use  is that these activities are common among gay men â€" in reality, only a minority of gay men take meth and have unsafe sex. Sources of Misinformation in the Gay Community So where do these myths come from? There are several possible sources of this misinformation. One source of the misinformation is research bias.  Studies of drug use among gay men may recruit samples of men who are not representative of the full population of gay men, but instead, subpopulations of drug-using gay men.  While it does appear that subcultures of gay men do engage in recreational drug use, those who do not may not be identified by researchers, particularly if they are well integrated into the mainstream community. In fact, when studies are carefully reviewed, there is not a consistent message that gay men use drugs more than straight or bisexual men.  In fact, it seems that while bisexual young people are more likely to use drugs than other sexual identity groups, gay young men are not necessarily more likely than straight men to use drugs, particularly alcohol. Another source of the stereotype could reflect gay men when they are new to the gay scene, who are isolated, and reach out to other gay men through gay dating sites and gay bars, simply because it is the easiest way to meet peers and potential partners.  The focus of these settings may be casual sex and even  PnP, which can seem to be the norm.  This doesnt reflect non-sexual relationships with other gay men who are not engaging in these activities, which can take time to develop. The stereotype can also be reinforced deliberately and used to take advantage of the naivety of young, less experienced gay men.  Some unscrupulous drug dealers  take advantage of young, naive gay men by selling them drugs apply  peer pressure  by implying that drug use is what all gay men are doing, rather than that they are exploiting a young man to do something unwise or unusual. Another place these myths come from is die-hard homophobes.  Homophobia may be conscious or unconscious, but some very harmful attitudes towards gay men emerged in the 1980s, and for some people, have not disappeared.  These attitudes can include the belief that gay men are more likely to both use drugs and to engage in compulsive sex than heterosexuals. The Reality In reality, drug use and sex addiction can occur in men or women, and in both heterosexuals and sexual minorities.  Although party and play are typically used to describe gay drug-fuelled sex, in fact, the practice of taking drugs prior to casual sex is common among sex workers, who have to cope with a variety of stressors, including having sex with people they are not attracted to.  And the phenomenon of heterosexuals getting  intoxicated  and even  front-loading  before engaging in casual sex is so common as to be considered normal in many communities, particularly among younger people.

Presently, Marijuana is illegal in the United States due to the racially motivated Marijuana Tax Act of 1937. This law was proposed by Harry J. Anslinger the acting commissioner of Federal Bureau of Narcotics. In his testimony to Congress he stated, There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the US, and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz and swing, result from marijuana usage. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers and any others (ukcia.org, (n.d), para. 1). Since this time, the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 has spawned more strict laws that have many unintended side effects. It was the symbol of Gods provision. When Jesus was at the Last Supper, he took bread and broke it and said this is my body, given for you. It became a symbol of Gods love, of the sacrifice of Jesus which once and for all demonstrated to the world how much God loves all people. As often as you eat it, do this in remembrance of me. We often take that line that Jesus spoke and apply it to the celebration of Communion where we reenact the Last Supper. But Jesus didnt only mean remember me when you come to Communion. He meant remember me every time you eat, because the very food you eat is a reminder of my love for you. That love is the love that led Jesus to the cross. Through his death we have access to Gods grace and forgiveness. Because of this love, we have hope that when we die, we will spend eternity in heaven with God. All we need to do is believe! Gods love is something that is so big, so powerful that it is hard to grasp. In our text from Ephesians we see that Paul prays that we might have the power to comprehend how wide, and high, and deep, and long Gods love for us is (Ephesians 3:18). It takes the very power of God to understand his love and what that means for us as a people. Paul says that the church is meant to be a place where Gods love is known. When people walk through our doors, they should meet with Gods all consuming, never-ending, reckless love. We can experience this love through the work of the Holy Spirit in our hearts and through the welcome that we extend to one another. In our text from Ephesians, we get an insight into Pauls prayer life. Paul was the epitome of someone who labored for Christ. He planted some 20 churches while going on four major missionary journeys. He preached countless times and witnessed thousands of people come to faith. He faithfully stewarded these churches, providing correction and guidance when necessary. Like I mentioned last week, the church at Ephesus was pretty healthy, but Paul wanted them to grow deeper in their understanding of Gods love. His prayer is twofold: he prays that they will be strengthened in the Spirit and have power, and he prays that Christ will dwell in their hearts. These two things, power from the Spirit and Christ in us are at the center of Christian maturity, and Paul says they are a result of being rooted and grounded in love. Christ and faith in Christ is the first block of our foundation, but receiving Gods love is what keeps us on that foundation. Paul writes that we should be rooted in Gods love. The word rooted is a gardening term. What does it mean for a plant to have good roots? The root system provides nutrients for the plant. They absorb minerals and nutrients, but they also provide stability. There are some plants that have poor root systems, and they produce poor fruit and they easily topple in storms. Here in West Virginia, it is common after a spring thunderstorm or winter snowstorm to go out and find trees blocking the road. They often look like this: Different trees and plants have different types of roots. The silver maple tree has one of the most impressive root systems. There is a popular picture of a silver maple that did not get washed away during a major flood. While the waters washed away the soil, this root system went deep and strong and the tree remained in place. Paul wanted the Christians at Ephesus to have their faith deeply rooted in Gods love. When we face difficult times, tragedies, sorrow, we dont need empty words of comfort. We need Gods love. We need to know that despite the raging storms that might surround us, God is there. He is with us. He cares. He loves. Having strong roots in Gods love also sustains us to produce good fruit. We are called to walk through life being different from the world. Christians should be known by producing the fruits of the spirit. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, goodness, and self-control. No matter how hard we try on our own, we cannot simple muster up these fruits, we cannot force them. They are naturally produced when we are rooted in Gods love for us. Accepting love can be an incredibly difficult thing at times. When we are hurt by a friendship, a parent, a romantic relationship, it does something to our heart. It kind of tarnishes our perception and thus our ability to receive love. When our relationships are cruel or seem to demand an impossible perfection, it is quite natural to use these broken perceptions of love and to apply them to how we view Gods love for us. Ive done this myself I am quite a perfectionist naturally. Throughout my education, relationships, and even in my preaching, I expect to be perfect. But perfect, isnt really possible. I did a great deal of soul searching, trying to discover where this compulsion to be perfect came from, and I discovered that I thought that I was able to earn love based on what I did. This is an incredibly easy thing to do because many people will reward achievement and ridicule failure. But we cant apply this view of love to God. Gods love is never dependent upon how I perform, because God knows Ill never be perfect. Gods love isnt even dependent on whether or not I sin. Gods love is still there. Now when I sin, his love corrects and calls me to repent, but the deep love of God never leaves. God knew full well that we werent perfect thats why he sent Jesus to live the perfect life and be the perfect sacrifice so that we could have access to Gods love. Relationship with God means living with Christ in us, with the full benefits of being Gods children. If we believe in Jesus and show up to church, but we dont seek to be deeply rooted in Gods love, its like living our lives at half-throttle. Once there was a backhoe operator on a construction site who surprised one day by the owner of the company. Being relatively new to his job, the operator was exercising care in his manipulation of the machine. Suddenly the motor, which had been set at half-throttle, roared to life. The startled operator looked behind him to discover that the owner was holding the lever wide open. Being deeply rooted in Gods love and accepting our identity as Gods children revolutionizes our lives. It enables us to love our neighbors. It gives us patience with difficult people. It helps us live free from the sins that hold us back. It restores our relationships and helps us have the ability to be our best. When we open our hearts and receive Gods love, it necessarily changes us. The rules arent what change us. The showing up to church isnt what changes us. Its the relationship with God and the abiding in his love that changes our lives. The relationship changes the very disposition of our hearts and then and only then can we begin to fulfill the command to love God and our neighbor. We are enabled to walk in holiness not through striving and human perfection, but through divine action. Oh the deep, deep love of Jesus that given to us. May we be rooted in Gods love, may we have the Holy Spirits power to understand the love, and may we have the courage to abide in Gods love. One of the great keys to staying in love with God is to come to this Table of Grace and receive the elements of Communion. In this we commune not only with each other, but with God himself. He meets us at this altar and we receive his love. Not through our worthiness but through our faith in Christs worthiness. Come expecting an encounter with God through the power of the Holy Spirit. The play is an adaptation of the Greek myth of Pygmalion who fell in love with a statue as it was more real in the understanding of its own composition than the actual women he had observed and grown despondent to. It is a work that closely follows the relationship between society and linguistics, wherein the women is real, but has yet to have her manners sculptured. In particular, it highlights the role of convention and articulation in relation to identities, depicting this through the subject of Eliza. Main Body When first completing the text, it is clear that there is an irony in the play that brings forth the now famed social and political points to the surface. However, one may be forgiven for considering these points relevant in today’s society, though in a more fractured sense. This is because they relate to speech and language use in relation to social standing. // Although social standing in today’s liberal society is becoming an ever more redundant concept, using someone’s speech as an indication of someone‘s identity is still in evidence. This notion is apparent in the main plot line in which Eliza becomes entrapped to the perspective of a new language system. When adopting the role of the speaker, Eliza adopts a slowly differing identity that emerges with child like astonishment before she changes into what is essentially a different person. It does not continue to be a liberating and learning experience. Rather, the liberation of a woman hiding behind the veil of civility in a bid to expose it, perhaps showing the power of the human spirit over class in the process, is lost. That is to say, that on speaking the language through the conventions of class Eliza loses sight of the world through her former eyes and comes to view it through her new language that cannot be escaped. Essentially, it is through this change in persona that the play delivers its moral warning and cutting implication in that the core of the human being cannot escape from the language that it uses to identify itself with. The language and convention used by those of high society is responsible for each of their perspectives and it is not the person or people‘s speaking the language. Essentially, if you are to change the person’s language, language use and perspective then they themselves will come to define themselves and their being according to the structural meaning inherent to the language that is used by that society. This is indicated throughout Eliza’s discussions and becomes the main rationale for all that she does. For example, in one part of the play she states that ‘’you know I can’t go back to the gutter, as you call it, and that I have no real friends in the world but you and the Colonel’’ (Shaw, 1998). This short extract shows the great division based upon the language being used and the fact that it is represented by a social reality, in this case being social standing. What is interesting about the use of language in relation to others is the way in which Eliza is accepted and rejected at different times during the play. For example, it first appears that Eliza is rejected from society as her language does not denote the correct social grouping, stock and/ or class. This is first justified as being because of her use of language, accent and the incorrect convention. However, it appears on later reading that the convention is of little consequence as she uses the same convention, but put to a different context. Rather, it is the response from others alone that make it something of note. At one point during the play she makes the assertion that speaking properly (meaning without a cockney accent) is simply learning to dance in a fashionable way, which accentuates this point even further. Essentially, the assertion that she puts forward here relates to the realisation of the superficiality of language in its conventional format as both languages mean exactly the same thing from a pragmatic perspective. At this stage she is learning the meaning of language and the convention of getting from one thing to another via language use. She realises that the only difference is a superficial one as the functional meaning (cause and effect) is the same whichever language is spoken. Essentially, the only different in the language is the significance of the source of referents, which dictate a different context to convention. Therefore, her conclusion is that it is merely a state of fashion in which the dancer dances the same, but where one dancer adopts the fashionable style, the other is overlooked as being able to dance (Baudrillard, 1968). This conclusion relates to the elements of high society that come with the speakers of proper English and that are not afforded to those of a poorer language, such as cockney. Those that do not speak the language are simply those that do not speak of anything meaningful, when in reality there is simply a clash over the source of referential meaning.
